Keiss Primary School

In December 2015, Alexander sent a box of first editions of The Christmas Present to Keiss Primary School in Scotland where a very good friend of his is the Headmistress. She distributed the books amongst the kids and they each gave their review.

They were brutally honest, heartwarming, and funny!

Some of the kids were also kind enough to submit drawings and pictures. These were equally brilliant and, as with every review, he truly appreciates them all.

You can see them here for yourself, in their own words...

Carter, age 9

This book is about a nine year old boy called Gabriel who didn’t believe in Santa. However, Gabriel the Elf and Rudolph came to help him to believe in Santa again.

I liked the book The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. I’d give the book a 7/10. The front cover was cool but there could have been more pictures. My favourite character is Rudolph because he is funny. I think this book would be suitable for ages five to ten.

It was the best book I ever read!

Ashley, Age 11

I recently read a book called The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. It was a fantastic story. My favourite character was Rudolph. I think it needs some pictures so it would look better but I would recommend it to Primary 3/4. I will give it 7 out of 10.

Ewan, P5

I was just reading the amazing book The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. I loved it-I’d give it 10/10. I recommend it for ages 8-11. If it had some pictures for the littler ones to show them what’s happening they would like it too. My favourite characters were Rudolph and Gabriel the elf because Rudolph was constantly drooling on Gabriel the elf.

I think it’s the Best Book ever!

Inge, P5

I recently read The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. I thought it was really good and imaginative. I liked how everybody had their own elf. It was good how it showed all the emotions in the book. My favourite character is Gabriel the elf. The age group is 4 to 10. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. To make it even better add more pictures.

Ben, Age 9

I give this book 10/10.  My favourite character is Gabriel the elf because he can be funny sometimes.  This book is a story book.

I liked all the characters. The story is about a boy called Gabriel.  He didn’t like Christmas at first but then an elf came with a reindeer called Rudolf.  Gabriel the elf showed Gabriel how much his mum cared about him so in the end he enjoyed Christmas.

Allister, P7

Alexanders Mccabe’s book is great though it could do with a few pictures. It has a great story line from start to finish. It’s very funny and adventurous. I hope he does some more books like this one. If I had to give it out of 10 I would give it 10/10. I would recommend this book to anybody from 6 and up. I would read this book a thousand times it’s really good.

Jamie, P6

I really loved this book The Christmas Present.  It has a really catchy name. I would recommend it to 7-13 year olds. It is so gripping that I couldn’t put it down until I’d read it all. I would rate it 10 stars if possible – best book ever. It is sad and funny but the best book I have ever read. I love the idea of traveling in a snow globe.

Jessica, Age 10

I read The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe.  I think it is really good.  My favourite character was Gabriel the Elf and I like how it was in his imagination. And I think ages 5-12 would like it. People who believe in Santa or Rudolph and elfs will like it. I would give it 5 out of 5. 11 out of 19 people in our class liked it. And who would not like to see their own elf and Rudolph?

Ivor, P7

The book is called The Christmas Present by Alexander Mccabe. I will give this book 4/5 because it will be better if there was pictures for younger boys and girls. In my class 11 people loved the book out of 19 people. I think this book is suitable for p1 to p7. My favourite bit was the elf called Gabriel.

John, Age 10

I really enjoyed reading The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. My favourite part was when Gabriel kept reminding himself big boys don’t cry. I recommend it to seven–eleven year olds it is VERY entertaining.

Lana, p7

I recently read The Christmas Present by Alexander McCabe. It was a really really good story.  Anybody that loves Christmas as much as me or just loves reading about Christmas would absolutely love this book. I would give it a five out of five. I really liked how if they didn’t believe in Christmas their elf had to go to the south pole and could only ever come back if they believed again. It was an amazing idea. I loved it so much!

I got hooked to this story from the first couple of pages. I didn’t want to stop reading it was so good. I got really excited when Gabriel the main character goes in the snowglobe and saw his dad and his new family.

It was quite sad at some points like when he left his mum and he wanted to run away but the ending was great and every time you read this book it makes you love Christmas that little tiny bit more. In my class 11 out of 19 people loved it and four people liked it. Some people just don’t like Christmas that much but it really was an amazing book.

Liam, p5

I just read The Christmas Present.  It is written by Alexander McCabe. The book is ok but it is not the best story line. I would give it 6/10.  It is a good book for people who like Christmas story. I give it 6/10 because some bits aren’t the best.  My favourite character is Rudolph. The book is an adventure book. I think children would like it more if it had pictures. The story is about a boy who leaves his mum and tries to get to his dad but the elf and Rudolph get in the way.  In my class 11 people
out of 19 people loved it.

Zak, P7

I will give this book 4 stars out of 5 because it was good but it had no pictures in the story. Overall it was good. I think that it is for ages 9-12 and if it had pictures in it will be for 6-12.
